QT Black & White Quilt #7

This is Class #7 in the Black, White and Green quilt and we are starting with:

Beacon Lights
page 44
Judy Hopkins 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks

One thing I should not do is watch a good movie when I am sewing these block, because I didn't stop to take pictures.....so I went to my comp. and drew up this block in EQ7 and printed it out so I could show you how I sewed it together.

The second block is:
Sugar Bowl
page 26
Around the Block with Judy Hopkins

Now for a fun new way....I drew a 13 1/2 inch square on a sheet of tissue paper and drew a cross line through the center. I know it's hard to see, but it's tissue paper and I wanted to use a pencil for the lines.

I am going to be using up my scraps of fabric I have, remember those pieces I cut wrong or had extra or just some 2 1/2 inch strips. Now you are going to do some simple strip pieces and cover one of the triangles. This is starting with 2 pieces of fabric rights sides together and sew, then add another piece. Keep checking to make sure that after you flip the fabric over it will cover the line for the triangle. You don't need to sew pass the line very far, just about 7 or 8 stitches. Sewing 1/4 inch seams. Please press as you go..it will look nicer and lay better. I also tighten up my stitches by 1 or 2 marks (I put my machine on 2.5 for stitch length).

After you have the first triangle done, change the direction you are sewing and sew the next triangle differently.

Working with the 3rd & 4th triangles, I usual sew them together. This is where I use up the smaller pieces of fabric and sew them together until I get a strip. I general use this strip as my 2 -3- or 4 row.
This is one of my strips

Here you can see how I finished that section...

This is one more I did...

I don't like cutting them up until I plan on using them, but I wanted you to see what you get. I plan on using these as my side triangles and corner triangles when I put the quilt together on point. Depending on how you handle your fabric, you mite want to stitch around the out side of the triangles about 1/8 inch from the edge. Remember that the tissue paper will tear away easy and you will be working with bias edges. (That means it will stretch easily.) If you do stitch, do it before you tear the tissue paper away and try to do it when you are ready to use the triangles.

You can also do this and cut out pieces for your quilt blocks you are sewing. It adds a lot of insterest and makes your quilt block look like you worked really hard to do the pieces.

I wanted to spend a minute on rules and tapes. They are many, many kinds and types to choose from. Find ones you like. Look at the guide lines and color, do they have different sizes and shapes? Can you see them, how does it look on top of fabric. My favorite plastic rulers are the Omnigrid and with the tapes try to get one from a good quilt shop. Mine are Fiber-Glass. But the most important thing is, when you start to use one brand of ruler....stay with it. Not all rules are the same and sometimes your blocks will not be the same size after you sew them together. I do use tapes when I sew the borders on, but there again I only use one of my tapes and not two of them, even if they are the same brand, and I only use them to measure the border and then the fabric for the border.

OK, now lets talk about the Corner Triangles and the Side Triangles. These are used to piece together you blocks on point. Here they are colored green. You are doing this so that the grain or straight grain of fabric will be on the outside of the quilt. It will make sewing the borders on nicer.

The Corner Triangles are made from a square cut in half diagonally in one direction, giving you 2 triangles. You need to calculate the size of square needed by dividing the finished block size by 1.414 and adding .875" (7/8") for the seam allowances and then round this up to the nearest 1/8".

The Side Triangles are made from a square cut corner to corner, twice, giving you 4 triangles. You need to calculate this size of square by Multiplying the finished block size by 1.414 and adding 1.25" (1 1/4") for the seam allowances and round this up to the nearest 1/8". I will add about 1/2 to 1 inches more to the beginning square and then trim them down later. It's better to start alittle bit bigger than to sew them again because they are to small.

QT 30's Table Runner

This is my 30's table runner I just finished for my dinning room table. The table runner measures 73 by 31 inches and is machine piece and hand appliqued with machine quilting. My table seat's 12 people so it is large and most table runners really look funny sitting in the middle of the table because it is so large. Now I have one that really looks like it fits.

QT Black & White Quilt #6

Here we are with Lesson #6 on the Black & White Quilt. Don't forget to save all your scraps for next time.

This is Flower Basket page 109
Judy Hopkins 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks

And the second block is Hour Glass II on page 142
in Judy Hopkins 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks

This is how I store my fabric, Plus I also have larger plastic drawers I use. I like cutting 2 1/2 inch strips and using them. After I have used them I move them into another pile, so I can see and remember what I have used and what I have not used. You can see the 2 piles of 2 1/2 inch green and white with black. The black prints are under my green one. I use a file folder to separate different piles in the same tube. You can see my pile of scraps I have already. Some of these went into the blocks I made this time by doing them scrappy. You don't have to spend as much time getting your fabric ready for the blocks if you do it this way. I label the tube as well, so I know what is in it.

When I am making a quilt, I like to cut my binding and get it sewn together before the top is done. This is one of those job I didn't like to do, so by getting it done early when you want to sew, it's done and out of the way by the time you need it. I also start working on the back, any extra blocks or strips I get done too, so after the quilt top is finished, I have very little work to finish the back and I feel like the quilting fairy came and did some of my work for me. If I get some of the work done, I hang it on a hanger and hang it in the quilting closet to wait for the rest and then it is off to the quilting machine. This is one of my next quilting projects. Try to label the project by writing on the plastic bag the binding is in. (That's because it is usually the first thing done.)

QT American Quilt

This quilt came from the McCall's Quilting 100th Issue magazine. It was a simple quilt to make and making an American quilt is something I have never done before. I adapted the quilt to use my Accuquilt hexagons cutter. So I sewed strips of fabric together and then cut them with the Accuquilt cutting all of my hexagons at once. then I sewn them together using the sewing machine. I needed to make the blocks a little smaller, but the rest of the quilt was easy to change because it was all straight lines.

This is the back of the quilt. A dear friend gave me a charm packet of American fabrics so I used them and even had a few scraps of the top I could use up.

QT Black & White #5

Well, I finally made it with lesson #5. I have been really slow this week trying to get this up. And promise to do better next time. Don't forget to save all your scraps and miss cut pieces. We will start to use them next time. Here are the next 2 blocks:

This is Flock of Geese
and is found in Judy Hopkins 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks
Page108

And the second block

This is Magic Triangles from Around the Block With Judy Hopkins
Page 84

I did some looking last night and you can still buy both books, you mite have to look for a good deal on the Around the Block book. She also has about 3 more block books that are oldies but goodies that I have never seen before. But remember there are many books out there that have just blocks in them, many with the same name and some blocks have more than one name to too.

When you go into your sewing room how do you find your sewing area? Do you have threads everywhere, little pieces of fabric scatter around that you have sewn on, or do you find more than 1 quilt project at any given time? Check this picture out and see what you do or what you would like to do?

If you choose the 1st one then you are on your way to getting lots done with your time. I start with a basket of pieces that I pins together while watching TV with my husband. Picking up one or two and sewing them to end off those threads when you are piecing your quilt you are working on. I have use my thread to the very best and kept my sewing room clear of those threads everywhere. I picked a project that I really don't want to sew but still want to make, like that drunkards path. Sometime when I don't have anything to do or just feel like sewing, I will sew up a bunch of them. I press them when I press my other project and before long I have made a freebie quilt. The next pictures will show you the ending off and the freebie project I am working on right now. I have a design wall that is about 9 X 10 that I have covered with Warm 'N Natural. For now it is just staple to the wall, maybe one day I will put a wood molding around the edge. My fabric sticks to it very well and I can get away from my project and look at it straight on. You can click on the picture to make it larger.

Tips in scrappy piecing. It doesn't seem to matter how hard you try to do scrappy, when you get it all done and quilted, you set back and look and there they are....the same 2 pieces of fabrics sitting side by side. Because I don't like the headache, this is what I do.

1. use as many different pieces of fabric as you can.
2. cut some of each of the fabric pieces.
3. get a tray or one of your large square rulers and play cards with you fabric and layer different pieces together and use up the pieces you have cut out. I normal don't use the same piece of fabric more than twice.

4. take the tray over to your sewing machine and just sew. Enjoy your time because you aren't worried about the sets you are sewing, you have already sorted them out.

5. find a happy space to iron. I have my iron as far away from my cutting table and my sewing machine as I can put it. It gives me a chance to get up, move around, work out the kinks, and I enjoy my sewing more. I have my music playing there in the corner. Sometimes I get lost in the music. You can see that my spray starch is right next to my ironing board.

6. when you press, press again like you are playing with cards. Do a row, push them to the side of your ironing board and press an other row. After you have fill up your ironing board, cut the threads and make stacks. Pick up the stacks in a different order than what they lay on the ironing board and this will mix the sets up more. I have laid a piece of muslin on my ironing board so you can see what I am doing better. I like having a bright and cheerful ironing board cover.

7. get that tray out again and re stack the next set, not putting the same fabric together.
8. enjoy your sewing again.
9. Press and repeat again until you get your blocks done.

I like to work on about 6 to 8 blocks at a time because it will give me a better mix up of my fabrics. Doing it this way you don't have to think as hard and maybe by not trying as hard you will have fewer same fabrics setting next to each other.

Don't forget you can ask questions on the comments or show us your blocks by using Mr. Links and ENJOY.
