Sister's are forever as these two little girls having tea from Lily of the Valley can tell you. All I had was a brother, but I love the friendship and closest I see in Sisters, I guess that's why I am so close to my girls and my granddaughters. They are here for the Lollipop Crafts Challenge #24 Sisters.

OK, Barbara and I were playing...She challenged me to color on something other than paper and to do a background for one of my cards like she does....Well, I had started to color this little girl 'Some Bunny Loves Me' from Cuddly Buddly. She had me look at Zoe's digitals from Make it Crafty and I found 'Garden Picket Fence' and thought that it would be perfect together. The background is printed on fabric and my ink jet printer (something I have wanted to try out for years now) and I colored it with colored pencils. It was really kind of fun.... As I was coloring I thought of many ways to finished her off, but decided to do a portrait......This is me, playing outside when I was a little girl.

Here is some information to help you get started on your quilting:
Basic Quilting Supplies: Sewing Machine (unless you like to hand-piece) Thread for General Sewing ( I like 100% cotton, white, cream, or beige) Quilting Thread for hand quilting Scissors for cutting fabric and threads Pins Needles ( I like between's 9-10) Rotary Cutter Rotary Mat Acrylic Rules Iron and Ironing Board Marking Pencils/Pens Quilting Frames or Hoop
Fabric Preparation: Wash or don't wash, that is the question. I like the look of the winkled quilt if I wash the first time after quilting. Some colors bleed and you can check it with a clean white cloth that has water on it, rub the fabric and if the color comes off then prewash or use Retayne to stop the bleed, or both. I find that some reds and blues bleed the most.
Cutting Fabric: The rotary cutting supplies will help you be more accurate, but be careful the blades are VERY SHARP! Always include 1/4" seam allowance. (less if you are appliqueing.) Just remember to be accurate and careful. When you buy fabric you can buy a quarter of a yard which is 9" by 40/42" or a fat quarter which is a half of a yard cut in half again, it's 18" by 20/21". Some pieces will cut better from one over the other one.
Pressing: I all way press my fabric before I start cutting and I always use Mary Ellen's Best Press, The clear starch alternative. I have not found a build up of starch with it. I find that Mary Ellen's Press will set the fabric and I can cut easier, sew easier and repress easier and my blocks look so much nicer after I have made them. Remember to press which is an up and down motion and not ironing which is a side to side motion.
Piecing: Pin if you need too, but always align the raw edges and don't stretch the bias edges. Take the time to set your seam allowance with your machine: I use graph paper, cutting the edge on one of the lines..putting under the machine with the needle a scant under the quarter inch line...put mole skin on your machine if you need help or use your sewing foot as a guide.
Test your seam allowance by cutting 3 pieces of fabric 1 1/2" by 3 1/2" and sew them together. After you are done the middle piece should be 1" and the 2 outsides should be 1 1/4". You should have a square that is 3 1/2", if not do this again until you have it right. I have more than 1 brand of sewing machines, so I just write down on a piece of post paper and put it on my machine. That way I don't have to remember what the # is for each machine and I can double check it every time I quilt.
OK, I think you have enough information to start. I will be giving more helpful hints along the way, but if you have any question just leave me a post and I will try to answer them for you. Remember to save all of your scraps for another lesson later and enjoy what you are doing. Next week you will be getting 2 more blocks.

It's a mystery..... Quilter's and want-to quilters wanted.....
I am going to be making a traditional block mystery quilt and wanted to know if you would like to come along? I have been quilting for about 35 years, taught some classes and just really enjoy quilting. I like to get a pattern and change them to fit me and the mood I am in. My husband has spoiled me with anything I wanted or needed or thought that I needed to supply my quilting habit.
Now I want to share some of the things that I have learned along the way, do it from my home and have fun quilting together and make another quilt. This one is going to be about 54" by 62". A great quilt for cuddly up with a good book or watch a movie with. These are going to be 8 in. blocks...not to big...not to small.
First I want to show you my first 2 blocks...there will be 2 blocks about every 2 weeks.
Baby Bunting pg 40 RCQB
Fair and Square pg 103 RCQB Every 2 weeks you will see 2 blocks to make.
Helpful hints and techniques
The 2 books I am using are Judy Hopkins 'Around the Block' (ATB) and '501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks' (RCQB). All of the information is in there for different size blocks, all ready to use and get sewing. But...
If you don't have the books you can draft all of these blocks for yourself, here is how I do it: #1 Get yourself a sheet of plain paper or card stock and draw yourself a square. I am making 8 in. blocks so you would draw an 8 in block. You can draw any size block you want to make. #2 Draw a grid with 3 lines across and 3 lines down. #3 Trace over those lines with a black marker. #4 Use double sided tape and tap the paper to a color poster paper. This will make it last longer. #5 This is an option, but I took it to the copy store and had it laminated so it would last longer. Mine are about 20 to 25 years old and still works like new. #6 Now with another piece of plain paper, lay it on top and trace your block design. You have your square so if you need a triangle, just draw another line. Sometimes it helps to make a colored pattern so you can see it better. #7 Find out what the similar shapes are....Get another sheet of paper, Plastic template, or get out your Perfect Patchwork Templates from Marti Mitchell. Using one of the last two, you will never have to make the template again. I mark mine and put them in a bag or box. Trace that shape adding your seam allowance and you have your pattern.
This is what mine looks like:
You can make one of these for any grid and all sizes of quilt blocks you want to make and half of the work is done for you.
Fabric: I am using Black, White and a 'zinger' color of bright green. A zinger is something you use a little and is usually bright and colorful. I have wanted to make a black and white quilt for a long time....sooooo...now is the time. For a scrappy looks you could use all 30's prints or civil war fabrics. Remember what ever you do...more is better! The main idea is to choose fabrics you like, weather it is something you have always wanted to try or some of your favorites.
To start with, get yourself: 6 Fat quarters of color #1 6 Fat quarters of color #2 2 Fat quarters of color #3 your zinger a fat quarters is a half of a yard of fabric cut in half. The quilt shops knows what this is.
You will need more....and remember....more fabric, the more scrappy it will look. Pick colors that you can get easily, so you can add to it at any time.
You can watch or quilt along with us. And you can even upload your blocks if you want to share with us. Just use the linky at the bottom of this post. The collection will be open for three months and all the blocks will be posted in the same collection.
If you have any questions or need help, just post the details in a comment and I'll answer it in post to help everyone. Just remember this is fun and we all need something to look forward too.

This Pumpkin Table Runner came from the magazine International Quilt Festival Quilt Scene, special annual issue 2010-11. When I first saw it, I just knew I had to make it. I looked at it about 5 times when I decided that if I didn't make it now I would just put it on my shelve and forget it. It was a lot of fun to make...I brighten it up a lot and rearranged to pumpkins. Hope you like it.
The finished size is about 30 1/2" by 17" and I can't wait until fall so that I can use it.... It was nice because I just went to my fabric stash and made it in 2 days.

Out in front of my house is a rose bush....it is just about the only plant I have growing in my yard because I can't grow plants. The roses are beautiful and I have lots of fun taking pictures of them. This was just after a light rain in the spring of 2010 and believe it or not 3 weeks ago the roses were still blooming here in Texas. It has taken me this long to get the picture up and print it out, so it was like it was spring all over again.
I got an Honorable Mention for this photo at my photo club in Jan. 2011
